Shikha Surendrana, a small town girl from Puthencruz (Kerela) had big dreams but the conditions were difficult. Her father was homebound due to ill health and her mother was trying hard to make ends meet. She somehow completed her Engineering studies with the help of relatives but she had another dream. She wanted to become an I.A.S officer and serve the country. It seemed to be a distant dream as she needed specialized coaching from New Delhi, the hub of Civil Services preparation in the country, which is quite costly. Fortunately, she came in contact with ‘Samkalp’, an institute started in 1986 by Mr. Santosh Taneja, a veteran Swayamsevak of RSS, which helps prepare students for Civil Services Exam. Shikha started her coaching at Samkalpat nominal fees which included food and accommodation which is a big boon at a place like Delhi. Shikha made her dream come true when she achieved 16th rank on All India Level in 2017-18 I.A.S.
SimilarilyRajiv Kumar from Ronijajat (Rajasthan) is another success story of Samkalp. Rajiv belonged to a farmer family from Alwar district and no one in his family was educated. He got selected in Civil Services and is completing his training from Mussourie(Uttarakkhand).
Every year, Samkalp helps 20 students especially from the northeast and tribal belts who are intelligent and have potential but not the means to groom for Civil Services. Samkalp plays the dual role of family and mentor for these students. The daily routine consists of Yoga in the morning, Shakha in the evening and nighttime prayer which helps students to remain calm and focused. Special lectures series include lectures from eminent personalities like Major General P.K. Sehgal and Sri Sri Ravishankar whose lectures invoke Nationalism in students. According to the founder of Samkalp Mr. Taneja, “This institute was started with the intention of creating nationalistic administrative officers.” Following the path, Samkalp made a record in 2015 when out 1256 successful students, 670 were from Samkalp.
Every year, Samkalp organizes ‘Guru Samman Samroh’(Teacher’s Appreciation Ceremony) in which teachers, as well as students selected in Civil Services, are applauded. ‘Disha Bodh Shivir’ (Social Orientation Camp) is also organized in Jhinjoli, where almost 200 Civil Services Aspirants get tips for studies and are made aware of their duty towards the nation. The Special Lecture series is also part of the same initiative that is to instil Nationalism in future Administrative Officers. Mr. Gopalkrishna who is co-cordinator of Disha Bodh Shivir tells, “Speciality of Samkalp is that students do not feel alone in a metro city like Delhi because of the cozy environment of the institute.” This institution is special not only for an academic part but also for the values it imparts in the students.
