Disha: Giving Lives The Right Directions !!

When a massive cloud burst occurred in Ladakh in 2010, Neeraj's life got shattered. His father got severely injured and his family faced a very tough time. Today Neeraj represents a state of Jammu & Kashmir at national level as an Kho-kho player. He is a champ not only in sports but in academics too. In class 10th, he got 100 out of 100 marks in maths!! Unbelievable, isn’t it?

Even Neeraj himself thinks so, while he looks back to those turbulent time, he found shelter at Disha Velji Vishram Popat Boys Hostel, 2km. away from the famous Katra town of Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir, located on a beautiful hill top, in a small village called Kadmaal. But at Disha unusual and unbelievable things are the way of life. Whether it’s quality education or remarkable work in water conservation, Disha has carved it’s niche in the region. Established in 2005, by Sewa Bharti J&K, Initially, Disha was just limited to providing shelter to children of victims of earthquake victims in Kashmir valley but today it’s known for producing young talents and developing smart water conservation techniques. 

“In 2005, We started Disha with only 9 students. In the beginning, we didn’t have much infrastructure but when a Boston based Gujrati businessman Narendra Popat, was impressed with our work and donated 22 lakhs rupees to keep his father Velji Vishram Popat’s memory alive, Disha got it’s building, which has 5 rooms, 1 dining hall, computer lab, 4 guest room, 1 big prayer hall, kitchen and other facilities”, tells Jaidev Ji, Sangh Pracharak and northern region Sangthan Mantri of Rashtriya Sewa Bharti, adding currently 36 students are studying here. One of the students of here recently joined the J&K police, he shared.Overall development of the students is the USP of Disha. Computers, music, various vocational trainings, sports coaching and other activities are the integral part at Disha.“Education without moral values is of no good, that’s why at Disha ,we stress so much on moral values to make our students the perfect citizens in future”, explains Jaidev Ji. 

Disha has also done remarkable job in developing economical water conservation techniques especially designed for mountainous regions. “If you think that water is rarity in deserts only, correct yourself, as mountainous regions too starve for uninterrupted clean drinking water supply all the year-long”, tells Annusuya Khosa Ji, president Sewa Bharti J&K,, adding there were days when 300 feet deep-rooted hand pump too was incapable to meet the water supply needs in the premises of Disha, located on the hilltop. That hand pump used to go dry in summer season. But today through applying smart water conservation techniques, smooth water supply throughout the year is no more a distant dream, she elaborates, adding that villagers too are also getting benefitted from these water conservation initiatives by Disha”, 

Besides this, Disha is kind of a mini cultural pot, where one can smell the fragrance of the rich culture of hilly states of Jammu, Kashmir Valley and Ladakh under one roof.
