When messing around here and there becomes the only job a person enjoys doing, it is hard to be back on track and indulge in responsibility-based, productive work. Such was the case with Shaqeel, a teenager from Kalandar colony, Delhi. Wandering aimlessly, romping around had become his routine chores. Education was considered least important by him. And the basic scenario which parents look forward for, that their child would look after them and the household when they age, blurred as Shaqeel was nowhere near what he was expected to do.

But, like a ray of hope, entered in their lives, a team of karyakartas of Sewa Bharati which was associated with the Street Children Project. This specialized team of Sewa Bharti volunteers observed Shaqeel closely and visited his home. They asked his parents to take over the responsibility of not only educating him, but also shaping his behaviour in order to make him a boy with sense of good conduct and moral values, which was immediately agreed to.

Shaqeel joined the centre and immediately grasped the electrician’s work. He himself found it amusing of the change in him, that he had become obedient now more than ever. This was the magic of Sangha Swayamsevaks and Sangha Sanskaras! Acquisition  of the  skills of an electrician as well as the good teachings have done him a great deal in terms of both money and happiness.

The street children project initiated by SewaBharati in 1994 has flourished the lives of so many roving and neglected children. Raju Dubey, a child from Dilshah Vihar colony started being regular on the Sewa Bharati centre and absorbed the knowledge of computers. Currently he studies second year of B.Com and also works a projector contractor which earns him a moderate income. Santosh also quitted the aimless life and with the help of self-reliant sanskaras given at the centre, he associated himself with a utensils hawker’s job and earns quite well.

Planted as a seed with the emotion of Sewa, this project has grown into a huge tree offering shades of sanskaras to a lot of children. As any great work demands difficulties, the same occurred in establishing this setting as well. But more families associated as the development in the children became evident. On this date, thousands of children are getting educated through this project.

A senior karyakarta of SewaBharati, Delhi- Shri. Gyanprakash ji says that until we focus on the growth of these neglected children, the aim of all-round development of our nation seems difficult to achieve.

This project of SewaBharati has reached the very bottoms of many unprivileged sections in Delhi and is illuminating lives of the neglected children by conditioning their behaviour to become more purposeful. Thus, it is helping to keep various social evils away!
